This morning Bob McKenzie gave us the first glimpse into what a Matt Murray extension could look like. He reported what he believes is the general framework for a deal today.

EDIT 9:57 AM

It is speculation no more: Murray signed a three-year extension worth $3.75 million per season today. It will start at the beginning of next season.

Getting a starting goaltender locked up for three more years at under four-million dollars is a great thing in a salary cap league. The team knows they can win a championship with Murray between the pipes and will be able to save some coin in the short term. Eventually Murray will get paid if he somewhat lives up to the hype surrounding him now, but for now he isn't going to. I am of the belief it is better to invest in the players in front of the goalie than to break the bank for a goalie. Average goaltending is good enough to win and that has been proven time and time again with teams who control the shot attempt battle.

This doesn't necessarily answer any specific questions about Marc-Andre Fleury's future, but the likeliest scenario is still the Penguins trading their longtime netminder away at some point.

Murray returned to practice yesterday. Here are some of his thoughts courtesy of Jason Mackey

“Today was probably the most I’ve pushed it, the most aggressive I’ve been with my stick in front of the net with puckhandling and making hard passes,” Murray said. “Tested it out pretty good today. Felt real good. It’s still sore. It’s going to be sore for a long time. The strength is there, and it feels pretty good. We keep going day-by-day.”

Things seem to be moving in the right direction and it shouldn't be too long before the Penguins are full strength at the goaltending position again.
