Loathing the fear of missing playoffs

The great goalie debate has been settled. Marc-Andre Fleury reigns supreme over his replacement. The Vegas Golden Knights are also superior to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fleury led the Golden Knights by stopping 23 out of 24 shots. In all seriousness it was just another regular season game and both goaltenders played really well. Pittsburgh continues to struggle scoring goals at even-strength and Vegas’s Leicester City run continues to roll on.

Fleury wasn’t the only former Penguin to have a hand in Pittsburgh’s defeat last night. James Neal was one of the goal scorers and David Perron had an assist on the play.

The Penguins have now lost three consecutive games in regulation by one goal. They are competitive, but have nothing to show for it. They are currently outside of a playoff spot. While it might not be panic time there is some concern. Nobody has played more games than the Penguins in the Eastern Conference and the team’s underlying numbers point to most games being a coin toss right now. They are in a very difficult division and if the team stays the course they are not a guarantee to make the playoffs.

Don't go near that elevator - that's just what they want us to do... trap us in a steel box and take us down to the basement.

There’s a long way to go (more than half the season), the general manager won’t sit idle, but there should be some mild concern with the roster construction. The team looks tired and that has as much to do with the amount of hockey the team has played as it does with having a completely unplayable fourth line. This is a self- inflicted problem. It needs to be fixed.

Order us some golf shoes, otherwise we'll never get out of this place alive. Impossible to walk in this muck. No footing at all.

The Penguins can’t get any traction this year.

The days of Crosby and Malkin completely saving the day are probably over so the depth players need to step up. Conor Sheary is stuck on the third line and Bryan Rust was demoted to the fourth line last night. For the Penguins to be a functional team Rust needs to be a functional top nine player. Conor Sheary isn’t going to find his offensive game playing with Riley Sheahan. Patric Hornqvist on the left wing is a great indicator of how things have been going. This is like putting Jarome Iginla on the left wing. It doesn’t put the player in a situation for success. The forwards are supposed to be the strength of the team and right now there just isn’t enough going right with that group.

We can’t stop here, this is bat country!

To stay here would be asking for it. Fear of missing the playoffs is looming around the corner.

I hate to say this, but this place is getting to me. I think I'm getting the Fear.

Us too, Doctor.
