Blown away

The Carolina Hurricanes are the top possession team in the league and are finally realizing some of that potential that has been building for the last couple of seasons. This is very bad news for Pittsburgh as it is another team that they will have to leap frog to make the playoffs. The Penguins were blown out by the Hurricanes last night and that knocked their Hockeyviz playoff probability back to 43%. Dom Luszczyszyn's playoff probability is less kind to the Penguins. In his they sit at 37%.

The Metropolitan games are going to see huge swings in playoff probabilities because of how important these games are. Tonight's opponent is the New York Islanders and they are also sitting at 43%.

Here's the updated situation in the conference

The Hurricanes are going to be tough to catch. Great possession team and there's an argument just like the Penguins that their save percentage could improve. They are on the lower end of things in that department. In truth they have been for a few years

The reason for thinking that it will get better is the same reason for thinking it will get better for the Penguins. Is this Scott Darling's true skill or is he in a rut? Is he a below average goalie? I think he's an average goalie and things should improve to the mean.

Catching Carolina might not be realistic barring any major injuries. The focus then shifts to the Rangers and their four point lead in the standings with two games in hand. The two teams will play each other next week. That is a must win for the Penguins.

Who knows, maybe the Penguins will turn a corner for like the fifth time this year tonight.

This goal deserves another viewing. Video game stuff
