Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers will meet for the first time in the 2017-18 season. There are some similarities between the on-ice play.

Neither team is excelling in this area. Both teams are at the bottom of expected goals against per 60 as well. although the Penguins are faring much better in the standings. They are currently in third in the Metropolitan Division with seven points while the Rangers are in dead last in the Eastern Conference.

Tonight will have a marquee goaltender matchup as an all-time great will go up against the rising star.

Ian Cole will be a game-time decision and if he is to see game action tonight don’t be surprised to see a cage on his face protecting him.

In non-NHL news there is something the Southern Pro Hockey League is doing that I absolutely love and have talked about quite a bit on the podcast.

This is something that the NHL should already be doing. Teams that finish near the top of the standings don’t really get anything for doing so under the current setup. Home ice is nice, but there are a lot of times when their first round opponent is not ideal. Giving the teams the ability to select their opponent not only would provide the NHL with an interesting made for television event, but it would also reward the teams that finished higher in the standings. Thirdly, it would create instant rivalries because the team that gets called out would rally around that. There are no good arguments against this setup that I have yet to hear. Make it happen.
