A Look At Individual Game Scores

There isn't much in the way of current events to talk about with the Pittsburgh Penguins so I went digging for some unique and different information about the Penguins. I was fortunate to come across a very interesting piece written by Dom Luszczysyn at Hockey-Graphs

He came up with a rating system for players based on their single game productivity

Dom states in his article that he borrowed this philosophy from the NBA's version of this called a game score. If you want all the specific nuts and bolts of how he ultimately arrived at his version of the game score please click the link above and dig in.

Sometimes when creating metrics you can end up with players like Tyler Kennedy being near the top which makes no sense (I'm looking at you THoR). This was not the case with Dom's game score metric.

This is a list of players you would expect to be there. The top two forwards should be very familiar to Penguins fans. They are none other than Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Shifting focus to the defensemen you will also notice Kris Letang faring quite well. This really isn't a surprise to anybody who follows the team closely because they would know how vital those three players are to the team's success. Especially before the 2015-16 season when depth wasn't what you would call a strength for Pittsburgh.

For context here is what the average game score was for an NHL player last year

For those curious the player with the best game score in a single game since 2011 was Sam Gagner's eight point night when he was with the Oilers on February 2nd of 2012.

The best game score by a Penguins player during this sample was the March 26th game by Phil Kessel (5.1) where he had a goal and four assists against Detroit. Sidney Crosby (5.0) had the second best game score on February 2nd of this year against Ottawa with three goals and an assist.

Game score isn't meant to be treated as a god particle, but I thought it was a really cool way to look at what players are bringing it on a nightly basis. The good news for the Penguins is that they have three of the absolute best in the NHL at this. Combine that with depth and voila a Stanley Cup.
