What is the History & Lineage of the Winnipeg Jets?

When discussing the greatest goaltenders of all-time for the Winnipeg Jets a discussion developed of what is their true lineage. Many disagree with what team can lay claim to the past of the Winnipeg Jets (not that many would want to).

For instance is Dale Hawerchuk part of the Jets history or the Coyotes? He was honoured in Phoenix but with all due respect is there any connection between Hawerchuk and Phoenix other than he played for the team which was moved to Phoenix?

So now is your chance you tell me what is the correct lineage of the Winnipeg Jets as we know them today when looking at their all-time greatest players.

Before you vote consider this parameter we were given when developing these lists.

For each NHL team, we will choose a 22-man roster (12 starting forwards, 6 starting defensemen, two reserve skaters and two goaltenders). Players from all eras of team history can be included, even for franchises that have relocated and changed names. For example, Quebec Nordiques players can be considered for the Avalanche, original Winnipeg Jets for Phoenix Coyotes, Hartford Whalers for Carolina Hurricanes, etc

Does it make sense for the Coyotes to lay claim to the WHA Jets? What about players? Kovalchuk was a Thrasher can he be claimed but Winnipeg? How many teams can lay claimi to Gretzky, Messier (Vancouver won't) or Shanahan?

So just what is the team lineage and history for the Winnipeg Jets 2.0?

  • WHA and onwards
  • From the expansion of the Atlanta Thrashers
  • From NHL entry in 1979
  • All of it
