I'm back from the wilderness and thanks for waiting.
Welcome to the Vancouver Canucks Jordan Schroeder! Ranked #15 by TSN and falling 7 spots to be picked up by the Canucks at #22 where few thought he would be, could Schroeder be another gift from the draft much like Hodgson? Only time will tell but this 5'9" skater can shoot the puck like Bossy and likes to find different ways to beat the opposition. Although it appears size matters most in this draft it certainly is not indicative of successful players in the NHL, just ask
Patrick Kane. What we can hope for is that Schroeder is a Gillis type of player away from the ice and that he is prepared to fall into the development program being touted by the Canucks as the best in franchise history.
I expected a bit more excitement out of the Canucks but perhaps the excitement is to come. With almost little news coming out of the Canucks camp about Sedin negotiations it appears leaks aplenty and then comments with Luongo's. Why the difference in approach?
Right now Luongo gives this team a chance to win every night. If you were a UFA and you weren't sure about the future of the franchise player would you want to sign a long term deal there? You might but other options could be just as appealing. By making sure the hockey world knows that Luongo is going nowhere it seems that Gillis is setting things up for the possibility that the Sedins may not be around.
With Calgary getting an early jump on Jay Bouw, I think he will be signed as they have made enough moves to accommodate his salary no matter what it is, there is pressure for Gillis to match the move. It will be interesting to see what Calgary offers as no matter what they will overpay because they gave up assets to talk to him, foolish to let him walk away. However, from all accounts Jay Bouw wants to see the market so perhaps this story is far from over for Vancouver fans hoping for a stud defenseman.
As mentioned above there is no news on the Sedins and for some it is worrisome. I simply think it's Gillis not tipping his hand so that if they are gone no one sees him as desperate and if they are coming back players will not think they can get more elsewhere based on any possible Vancouver cap restrictions. It's cat and mouse all the way.
I know there were more players selected than Jordan Schroeder but we will have two months to review them and we are in the heart of the silly season and too many things to talk about. It should be fun and I look forward to some interesting moves in the next few days.
