Jets not losing Enstrom to Vegas?

First I don't think its necessary to make a deal with Vegas to protect either of Dano or Enstrom from being taken. While this oganization has holes and challenges losing either of the players does not create new ones. One of their departure only makes the hole a bit deeper or wider. If you look at the problem that way Engstrom's departure would have a much bigger effect on the team so that is why it's believed he's being protected.

This is what Darren Dreger had to say on twitter about 2 hours ago (4:00 CST).

So what is that deal and does the deal mean they don't take Dano either? What is one more year of Enstrom worth to the Jets? A prospect, high pick, low pick, combination?

One idea floated out in the Twittersphere was sending Nic Petan as compensation for not taking Enstrom. The crafty winger/centre would be a coveted player for an expansion team and with former team mate Brendan Leipsic apparently going to Vegas perhaps a Winterhawks reunion makes sense.

Some Jets fans are outraged though. Too much, overpayment, he's too talented. Certainly there is upside to Petan but where does he fit into the Jets long-term view? Where does he play?

Petan, using the great tools from Own the Puck barely compares to a archetypal 3rd or 4th line winger or centre when using last year's numbers. He has skill but so far it's not translating to the NHL. Comparatively Andrew Copp looks much more favourable to a 3rd or 4th line player using the same tool.

Debate all you want but the Jets are rich in prospects for wing and centre and if losing Petan is so harmful to the team there are bigger issues. Petan has had 2 years at the pro level to impress and push for regular work and has not quite succeeded in that effort. Blame the coach? Sure you could but he's not fully responsible for how Petan has played, just who he plays with or when.

In fact I would rather lose Petan right now as opposed to a 2nd round pick given the depth the organization has in forwards prospects and the lack of defence prospects.

This should be fun and we should know a lot more about what's going to happen very soon.
