From Devils to Flyers- what needs to change?

The Jets won the game last night but they didn't really win many battles as the Devils basically controlled the game from start to finish. In between the puck drop and the final horn the Jets just happened to put more pucks past Devils goalkeeper Corey Schneider than the Devils put past Connor Hellebuyck.

That trend is not going to work come the next three games as the Jets play the Flyers on Saturday (early) and then Washington and Nashville. The Devils are a talented team but they do not have the same punch that the next three opponents do. The Jets had chances last night but the Devils had more and while the attack of the Jets was there- the speed and tenacity of the Devils was more than the Jets seemingly were prepared to handle.

Going into this road trip I pegged the Jets as having a chance to get 8 points with two OT/SO losses but given the current state of success they could get closer to 10 points or more. That won't happen playing as they did last night.

The team had a day in the greater New York area and they could have easily had a bit of fun in the big apple and not been entirely ready or 'rested' for last night. This is a theory or guess based on no evidence to support it but I wouldn't rule it out.

With Kulikov out and Mason back in Winnipeg after suffering a lower body injury in practice the Jets continue to be the walking wounded. If you didn't hear they had to do an emergency contract for a Czech goalie from the Manchester Monarchs to fill in before Michael Hutchinson arrived on an emergency recall from the Manitoba Moose. What happens now is anyone's guess but Toby Enstrom could not have made his return at a better time.

Game takes

How big a gasp did Jets Nation make when they saw Maroon drill Morrissey into the boards and fall to the ice?

If you haven't heard Laine was asked about his goal, his 39th making him 1 behind Ovechkin for the NHL lead, and if he saw it go in. Yes he did but he didn't want to 'celly' too hard because he didn't like it.

I had my wife comment to me after Ehlers goal that the 'old Jets would have given up on that play but this team keeps going'. Her sentiment was that they don't quit as easy, are hungrier and have a different level of desire. Is that new or something that comes with confidence?

Connor Hellebuyck broke the team record for wins by a goalie in one season and he's likely to get more. Where does he finish in total wins this year and should he start getting more rest?

If you haven't seen the tweet (and I can't find it) but Stastny has the most points of any player traded at the deadline. It's got some media talking about signing him after this season- is that even possible? (no, not without some other moves) but seeing as what he's done for Ehlers and Laine there's reason to think getting him for 3 more years would be nice. Should the Jets consider it?

Back in 2011 it seems that any NHL streak that was happening came to die in the MTS Centre, last night the Jets ended Taylor Hall's point streak. Hall is an amazing player and it's sad Jets fans don't get to see him too often- what was Edmonton thinking.

To start this blog I suggested that the Jets have to be better for there next three games. How do they need to be better? Certainly through the neutral zone both defensively and transitionally on offence.

Tyler Myers had a tough game last night and he's starting to draw the ire of more than a few on social media. I'm tough on Myers but I also believe he's trying to do the right thing but in that effort he puts himself too far up the ice or too late to pass. I think he knows he's making some questionable decisions and that he's trying to play his way out of his weird slump. As many have said doing too much is often far worse than doing too little. Simplify the game- make it come to you. Use the force Tyler.

The other change that would be good to see is a bit less reckless forecheck from some of the faster forwards. This was a problem for Tanev early in the year and I noticed Roslovic doing the same thing a few times last night. Part of this change is by the player but also the coaching tactics to adjust to each breakout and attack- it will be necessary against the Flyers, Capitals and Predators.

Matt Hendricks centred Wheeler and Connor last night as Mark Schiefele was out. He didn't do a poor job, played within his limits and made sure to be aware of the game around him. That's smart from the veteran and while it's not the most ideal situation long term it shows where he fits in the coach's 'trust ladder'. He also probably fits pretty high with Wheeler's too as I doubt the captain didn't have a say in this too. Myers could take a page out of Hendricks' book in regards to how he adapted.

Early start tomorrow as no one plays more games at dumb times than the Flyers.
