Calder Cup Update

The Manitoba Moose, farm team of the Canucks, has tied up the 7 game series with the Hershey Bears, farm team for Washington. The stand out in the game was obviously Jason Jaffrey who got the hat trick but certainly not a player Canucks' fans have been anxiously waiting to see. As most of us would say- it's a great thing for Jaffrey but it's probably not going to change his hockey career.

The good news for this club is that they came back from a very sub-par game on Saturday night. Judging by the broadcast accounts Schneider was phenomenal through the night and as the game went on the players in front of him got better too, perhaps feeding off the play of the goalie. That's a good thing right?

Cody Hodsgon has also been playing and there has not been such an anticipated prospect in the Canucks organization since Pavel Bure. With Hodgson's awards and honours from the CHL this past season it's easy to see why Canucks' fans are way too interested in him. So did he do anything, not much tonight apparently but he is certainly not looking out of place since joining the Moose- 8 games played with 1 goal and 4 assists.

Dave Nonis draft pick gamble Michael Grabner was also playing and held off the goal list but had an assist. Grabner led all players with 7 shots on net too. It sounds like he is not afraid to shoot and has earned a reputation as a fast winger who can get around the defense, if he is to move on to Vancouver he will have to buy into the concept of being defensively responsible. However from what I could tell tonight he certainly was not out of place at any point.

Those are the three most significant pieces for the Canucks and it appears all is well with them in the quest for the Calder Cup. The series heads Hershey now for 3 games and then back to Winnipeg for games 6 and 7 if necessary. If you are interested in these games they can be heard over the internet at www.cjob.com on Saturday and Sunday.
