It's a two year deal worth $2.15 Million per year. Think about this for a bit before dismissing the deal it's the exact kind of move that plays into the Jets developmental wheelhouse. There's not long term commitment, there's no hue salary and the player is somewhat versatile.

Matthias can play center or left wing and that's the depth move the Jets need and gives support for the two guy who look to be future studs for the team, Patrick Laine and Kyle Connor. That's smart as Matthias can log minutes and he scores. Below is last season compared to departed Jets captain Andrew Ladd.

Now I'm not suggesting Matthias will replace Ladd nor am I saying he's the same calibre of player what I'm getting at is he's a low risk support player who when used appropriately can be a decent offensive contributor if he still has that in him.

While it's curious given the Jets penchant for depth role players like the Thorburns and Pelusos on the team one has to wonder if this is a low cost insurance policy for other moves that might be made in the future?

What would those moves be? Well they start with a certain Jets RFA defence man and a number of teams and possibilities. Perhaps there is a package in the works, or not but who else would go with Trouba in a package? That might be the hint to any next possible deal.

We'll get to that later in future blogs.
