OK… I think I’ve processed it… the Nashville Predators are in the Stanley Cup Final. I still can’t say, type or think that phrase without a certain sense on unreality, a sense of really??? But they are… and the team appears to be deadly serious about the mission. Even though they don’t know who the opponent is yet as Pittsburgh / Ottawa is going to a seventh game after Craig Anderson stopped 45 pucks in Ottawa’s huge Game Six win last night.

Pete Weber and I will have a Stanley Cup Final preview tonight on SlapShot Radio (7pm CT on 102.5 the Game) and we will take a look at both potential opponents with nhl.com writer Nick Cotsonika and the Puck Daddy himself, Greg Wyshynski.

So… who do the Predators “want” to be their opponent for the Final? The politically correct answer is “it doesn’t matter” … and in this case… I think it is the right one. Both of these teams present problems for the Predators… and both of these teams present positive opportunities for Nashville. Let’s look at them…

Pittsburgh is looking for their second straight cup, they have firepower, speed and confidence. They also have an incredibly banged up defense and plenty of dings up and down the lineup. They have solid goaltending and they have Final experience. Why would the Preds have any confidence there? Well… sweeping the Blackhawks certainly adds a little, plus they won their three series in three different ways. Their versatility may be a key.

The Ottawa Senators would be a mirror match, they have gotten mostly excellent goaltending, they have grit and are very good at clogging up the neutral zone. They really can’t match Nashville’s speed so the Predators will have to play that quick up and out game that was so successful against Chicago, with a little bit of the nastiness gained from the Anaheim series.
We won’t know who we get until tomorrow night… or (fingers crossed) Friday morning…
