Sunday Shots - Payback? Nah... but it was fun!

Here are today's Sunday Shots, captured by SSR's intrepid photographer, capturing all the fun of a Veteran's Day in Smashville!

It is an old Klingon proverb (sorry… went Trekkie on you) that “Revenge is a dish best served cold…” well last night, it was served on ice. The Nashville Predators served up a rather interesting 5-4 shootout victory in front of a crazed Bridgestone Arena crowd that wanted their share.

And they got it… with a side of Turris added in.

Kyle Turris made his Nashville Predators debut… and in the tradition of Steve Sullivan, Ryan Johnasen and PK Subban … he made an immediate impact. Scoring his first goal in gold to tie the game in the second and assisting on another in the third to give the Predators a 4-3 lead, Kyle Turris showed why David Poile wanted him. As the Penguins concentrated on shutting down the JOFA line, Turris’ second line was dangerous all night long, generating chance after chance.

What a fun back-and-forth affair… Pens go up 1-0 in the first… Preds explode for three early in the second… Pens close to within 1 by end of the period. Pens tie it early… Preds go up shortly thereafter… Pens tie is up again. No decision in the 3 on 3… Then it’s shootout time…

The groan was almost audible as the shootout began… a place where Pred Nation has pretty low expectations of success. It may be time to change those expectations as both Kevin Fiala and Filip Forsberg tallied in the skills competition to capture the bonus point and continue their win streak… now at four games.

So last year’s Stanley Cup Final rematch series is done with each team winning at home. LAst night's win wasn't revenge... or payback... but it was satisfying. Now, the last vestige of last season is done, time to fully move forward and see if these two teams can get together again sometime in June.

The Predators are back in action Tuesday night against the Washington Capitals, 7pm game time and very limited tickets remain. It’s the first Hockey Fights Cancer Night of the year.

Random Notes

- The Predators power play clicked well last night, going 2-6… not wasting any time scoring on the two successful efforts, I couldn’t even finish the power play call before the puck was in the net on both of them.

- In his postgame presser, Peter Laviolette called Craig Smith’s game last night, the best one of the season. Watch this Turris/Smith/Fiala line… they have the capability to do some serious damage.

- No updates on Scott Hartnell as of yet… he left the game in the first period after only playing three shifts.

- There were no fight last night… but it was a nasty, chippy affair. Pittsburgh seemed to adopt the Anaheim method of “they can’t call every penalty.”

- Nick Bonino did not go last night, he remains day-to-day.

- KHL Watch – Eeli Tolvanen’s Jokerit club is off until 11/15. Tolvanen has 14 goals on the season, combined with 11 assists he has 25 points in 27 games. Tolvanen is playing for Team Finland in the Olympic qulafying.
