You know times are desperate when you are engrossed by field hockey in the summer Olympics. As school heads back in the Nashville area, many of the players are beginning to come back and voluntary skates are getting more participation at Centennial Sportsplex.

I am working on my season preview blogs and will begin posting those soon, until then… how about some…

Summer Random Notes

- It’s bargain basement time in the NHL as there are quite a few UFA’s remaining… former Preds include Paul Gaustad and Eric Nystrom… David Legwand is still looking for a team, as is Marek Zidlicky, Anders Lindback, Matt Cullen and Matt Halischuk.

- It was a quiet Tuesday during the summer, and Shea Weber had his first media scrum in Montreal… Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore…

- The Jimmy Vesey race is heating up as we get closer to the Aug 15 deadline…

- Speaking of Vesey… I wish writer’s would quit saying that he “earned the right” to be a free agent… how exactly did he earn that right? By taking advantage of four years of development and coaching from a franchise only to walk away??? This kid has a lot of growing up to do…

- Patrick Roy surprised all by quitting as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday… bad situation gets worse… one month before camp opens, they gotta find a new bench boss.

- The talk in NY is showing some legs to the rumor of the Islanders getting their own arena… while the talk is centering around Queens and the Citi Field area, I am hearing that there is an effort to build an arena out by Belmont Park… Not sure how long they will be at Barclays…

- The Preds are having an open house on Friday night featuring a glow in the dark skate and George Plaster’s last show on 102.5 the Game. Good luck to George in his new role at Belmont University.

- Don’t count on the Olympics for the NHL in 2018… both the IIHF and the NHL are saying that the prospect looks pretty bleak.
