It was definitely a more disciplined team that wore the Blackhawk logo last night as the Predators fell to the Hawks 5-3. The Hawks were paced by the first career hat trick from Richard Panik and avoided a 0-3 start to this young season… and speaking of 0-3 deficits… the Predators did manage to crawl out of rather deep hole they dug for themselves, giving very little support to Marek Mazanec during a four minute span in the first period where the Preds gave up three goals.

I guess the positive to take from this is that the Predators never stopped working and got back within one twice during the game, but ultimately could not get the equalizer.

A critical look at Mazanec’s performance showed a young goaltender finding his legs. The goals given up in the first were all a tad fluky, nothing that screamed out “he shoulda had that one.” The young Czech netminder certainly kept his team in the game with a few really solid saves that allowed Nashville to get back to striking distance.

Given that both teams were in the same situation, back-to-back after travel, there was a surprising amount of energy through most of the game. You did feel the air come out of Nashville after Panik’s second goal that put the Hawks up by two again in the third period.

The team returned to Nashville right after the game and now will prep for Dallas. The Stars are in town for a Tuesday night matchup… limited tickets remain for this critical Central Division showdown.

Random Notes

- Miikka Salomaki went down last night, he appeared to take a shot off an unprotected outstretched arm, sending his stick and glove flying. Nu update on his status so far.

- Nice to see Craig Smith and Colin Wilson crack the scoresheet last night.

- Chicago, despite getting their first win, has to be concerned with the lack of production from their big names. Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Brian Campbell, Artem Anisimov and Duncan Keith have yet to score this season… bears watching.

- Tonight’s NHL Schedule – 3 games on the schedule, all times Central – 5pm – ANA @ NYI. 6pm – BUF @ EDM. 9pm – CAR @ VAN.
