A whirlwind day yesterday… as free agent after free agent signed, Pred Nation nervously awaited news from 501 Broadway.
News broke at around 2pm that Joel Ward had signed a new deal with the club, getting what he had asked for, 2 yrs, 3 million. Pred fans were happy with this, but it wasn’t the news they were looking for.
As more and more signings were announced… Hossa’s crazy deal in Chicago, Cammalleri to the Habs, Khabibulin to Edmonton, Cole staying in Carolina… tension began to rise, including behind the closed doors at the Predators hockey operations offices. Rumors began to break about interest from Buffalo and Minnesota…
The official word broke just after 5pm CDT… Steve Sullivan was remaining with the Predators. Then the craziness really began as we were about to go on with HockeyBuzz Radio in an hour… thanks to Kevin Wilson and the PR team at the Preds office, we were able to get Steve on the air for the show. The podcast of last night's show is posted on the HBR website.

How crazy is the Dany Heatley situation?
I would love to be a fly on the wall in a couple of different office yesterday as events unfolded. The differing opinions on what has transpired between Ottawa, Edmonton and the Heatley camp are wide and varied…
Folks in the Ottawa camp believe that they can do whatever the hell they please when it comes to trading Heatley to whoever they want.
The Heatley camp believes otherwise… and they appear to be right so far as the disgruntled winger has refused to waive his NMC, subsequently costing the Sens $4 million bucks.
Folks in Edmonton are confused, mad, and wondering when the hockey gods will smile on them again.
My take? The folks in Edmonton should probably be patient, this will probably work out for them and I expect Heatley to be wearing Oiler colors this season. As for the other two parties?
Heatley needs to grow up… and Sens owner Eugene Melnyk needs to pay up. You both made the deal… Heatley may have been looking to escape the memories of one Georgia night that ended in tragedy, but he hasn’t seemed to have learned that you can’t keep running from your mistakes. Mr. Melnyk needs to learn that negotiating in the media and not looking for a win/win when you don't have all the power cards is not a solid business strategy.

Eddie the Eagle looking for a comeback? Apparently Eddie Belfour has asked his agent to gage interest. He has not played in the NHL since the 06-07 season and hasn’t played at all since his 07-08 season in Sweden.

Went to a Canada Day celebration last night at the Italian Market off Charlotte… what a great time! Had some Poutine, a Labatt’s Blue and enjoyed some great music in the company of some really good folks, mostly Canadian, with quite a few Canadian wanna-be’s. Check out the pictures from the event at...
