Have you caught your breath yet?

The Nashville Predators upped their point streak to five games and continued the nice little run the team is on with a 1-0 win in Philadelphia. Last night’s wide open, up and down speed fest was fun to watch, but anyone expecting the 11 goal outburst that happened last week was disappointed. You could tell this one was going to be different considering the first stoppage of play was a TV timeout a little over six minutes into the contest. Play was stopped a total of 7 times in the first period… that is not a typo.

Up and down, back and forth… look up firewagon hockey and you might see a video of this game… the only thing it was missing was scoring and by the time we got to the third period… you felt in your bones that the first goal would win. Mostly because of the spectacular goaltending of Pekka Rinne and Michal Neuvirth.

Rinne started the third period by making three outstanding saves early in the frame, stopping quality chances from Sean Couturier, Travis Konecny and Dale Weise, but the Nashville defense had the Flyers talking to themselves. Philly had gotten used to filling the net and between the blueline and Rinne, they were completely taken off their game.

It didn’t take long for a turnover to lead to a breakout from Kevin Fiala, flashing down the left side and finding Colton Sissons with a nice little saucer pass. Sissons went far side low, beating the Flyers goaltender to put the Preds up 1-0.

The Flyers responded well, creating an immediate push back but Rinne stood strong and preserved his first shutout of the season and 44th of his career, even surviving a 6-on-4 in the last minute of the game as the Nashville defense locked it down and didn’t allow a shot in the last 40 seconds of play. The Predators won their first road game of the season, their 4th win in their last 5 games.

The team hopped on a bus post game for quick ride up to New York City where they will practice today at Chelsea Piers to prep for tomorrow’s matinee against the Rangers at MSG. Game time is 11:30am central.

Here are last night’s highlights…

---------------------------------

Random Notes

- Talk about a fast game... last night's game was played in 2 hours 22 mins.

- Colton Sissons continues to elevate his game… his game winner was the second straight game he has scored in.

- It was nice to hear Terry Crisp last night on the color. Witty, succinct, spot on analysis… the man has still got it! So nice of him to fill in for Chris Mason as he welcomes his new addition to his family!

- Gotta give a shout out to Alexei Emelin, he has brought a nice physical element to the blueline and has been invisible outside of the occasional big hit.… that’s a high compliment for a defenseman. The Subban/Ememlin pairing has been highly effective.

- Yannick Weber is with the team on this road trip and he participated in morning skate yesterday, still no timetable for his return.

- I know that coaches normally give the next start to a goaltender who has posted a shutout, but I would not be surprised to see Juuse Saros between the pipes tomorrow. It’s an obvious choice from a timing perspective given the opponent.

- Watched the last 10 and overtime of the Rangers – Islander game last night… The Rangers looked OK I guess… but they did appear to be waiting for the roof to fall in… Henrik Lundqvist bailed ‘em out to get the point, but couldn’t keep the Islanders at bay in the shootout.

- Hockey fans around the world are buzzing after this incredible play from Connor McDavid in the Oilers OT win last night in Chicago…

- KHL Watch – Eeli Tolvanen’s Jokerit club has now won 15 in a row, beating Ak Bars 3-1 yesterday with Tolvanen being held off the scoresheet an assist. Tolvanen has 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points in 19 games so far. The team is five wins away from the KHL record of 20 straight… and who holds that record? SKA St. Petersburg, who Jokerit plays next tomorrow.
