On the Bubble

The Nashville Predators roster was paired sown to 27 yesterday as nine players were sent to Milwaukee’s camp. Some familiar names were sent down, but no real surprises. Anders Lindback will be manning the nets for the Admirals this season and wil be ready to go if needed in Nashville. The lanky veteran had a nice camp and showed that there is still some gas left in that tank.

Forwards sent down were Trevor Smith, PC Labrie, Yakov Trenin and Emil Petterson. Trenin was not exactly a standout for me in this year’s training camp. Hopefuilly a year with Dean Evason and the Admirals will help the youngster adapt to the North American game. The interesting name his is Petterson. I was very impressed with the tall forward, a little bulking up wouldn’t hurt the young prospect. He comported himself well in rookie camp and in the preseason games he participated in. Keep an eye on this one.

On the blueline, Nashville sent Andrew O’Brien, Petter Granberg, Jack Dougherty and Alexandre Carrier down. Granberg was worth the flyer taken on him two years ago and showed a little promise right off the bat, but hasn’t really progressed… this could be a critical year in his career. Alexandre Carrier is definitely on the way up and is close to being ready to compete for a spot with the Preds. I bet we see him some this season, depending on the injury situation of course.

On Sunday I wrote about the “bubble” players… Carrier was one of those players I wrote about… trying to read the tea leaves here… with this move it appears that Samuel Girard may have an inside track on the 7th defenseman slot, if (and this is a BIG if) the Predators want to go with a younger player in that role. Honestly… you can make a case for Anthony Bitetto as the 7th d man due to his NHL experience and his performance in camp. Do you really want a prospect like Girard riding the pine as the 7th d man? This one bears watching.

The other “bubble” player that I wrote about that was on the sent down list was Emil Petterson. The move makes sense, especially given the “road to Nashville goes through Milwaukee” mentality of this franchise. So it brings the two “open” slots in the lineup down to one of three players, Vlad Kamanev, who’s performance seems to be gaining steam, Freddie Gaudreau and Miikka Salomaki.

Practice should be very interesting this week. The Predators play their final two preseason games at home this week… Thursday and Saturday.

Random Notes

- Preds 2017 1st round pick Eeli Tolvanen continues to tear up the KHL, posting his second hat trick of the young season yesterday. Check this goal out…

- Not to put too much on this 18 year old’s shoulders… but the youngster is showing leadership as well. Tolvanen’s hattie was part of a comeback effort that saw his Jokerit team come back from a 0-2 hole.

- Tolvanen is currently 14th in KHL scoring with 7 goals and 5 assists in 11 games. His 7 goals have him in a 3-way tie for 7th in the league. His Jokerit team is back in action on Friday as they host Spartak Moscow. Jokerit is looking to extend their three game winning streak.

- Looking forward to this week’s SlapShot Radio, we will be talking with former NHL referee Kerry Fraser about the new rules and interpretations happening in preseason games. Tune in Wednesday at 7pm.
