I’ve watched the debate over the new captain of the Nashville Predators… the fact that there is one is really kinda funny. Mike Fisher was the obvious choice from day one, even when I was looking at other candidates in previous blogs, Fisher just was the choice in my head. Even if he only wears the C for one year… but you do wonder if the C may extend his career with the Predators beyond this season.

Fisher just turned 36 back in June, has over 1000 games of experience in the NHL and is coming off one of his best playoff performances in his career. He plays the game with grit and passion, leads by example and is not afraid to be vocal with his teammates. He is respected around the league and frankly, he really doesn’t need the letter to lead as evidenced by his multiple King Clancey nominations.

In a different situation, Fisher would’ve been captain years ago.

But Paul… I hear you say… how does the “C” extend his career in Nashville? Well… let me tell you. Fisher’s contract expires on July 1, making him an unrestricted free agent, which basically protects him from the upcoming expansion draft. Even if Las Vegas drafted him, he would not be bound to sign there as he would be a free agent two weeks after the expansion draft.

The honor of getting the C also may entice Fisher to extend for another year or possibly two. His performance has remained steady on the ice, he continues to enjoy the game and given his family situation, staying in Nashville is a given… so why not play another year or two before heading behind the bench or to the front office at the age of 38?

The team is in good hands with on ice leadership… now let’s get this season started!

On a personal note… thanks for all the good wishes on social media, texts and cards, etc… for those that were unaware, my daughter got married last Saturday and it was an awesome experience.

Thanks to the staff at the Loveless Café for all of their hard work in making sure the weather (and a power outage) didn’t impact the ceremony or the reception… you guys were AWESOME!!!
