Final Score: Blue Jackets 3 – Red Wings 2

Game Summary

One play. This game in which the Jackets dominated with a 58.24% Corsi at 5 on 5 and a 36-24 shot advantage came down to one play. With seconds to go in this game, we saw a rare defensive breakdown by the David Savard-Ian Cole pair, they left the slot completely uncovered giving Darren Helm, who had already scored in this game, a golden opportunity to tie the game. Someway somehow Sergei Bobrovsky, who hasn’t played in a week due to an illness was able to get over and make the game saving stop.

This save was really the icing on the cake for what a great game from Bobrovsky. He wasn’t tested much, just the 24 shots, but he was big early in the game giving the Jackets a chance to find their legs on this back to back.

The Jackets got on the board first with a short-handed goal from who else but Matt Calvert.

This play, as they mentioned on the broadcast, started with David Savard behind his own net. He had the puck pinned down there and the Red Wings were unable to get it off of him. He was able to get to Alexander Wennberg and then jumped into the rush giving Jackets numbers the other way. Wennberg shows some great patience to wait out the goalie, the pass looks like it’s going to Savard, but he misses and it’s Calvert right there to put it home.

After that, right up until that Bobrovsky save this was the Seth Jones show. He gave the Jackets the lead early in the second period with his 12th goal of the season.

Jones absolutely blasts this. Him and Artemi Panarin coming in on a two on one like that is just unfair. Panarin does such a good job on plays like this. He can never guess what he's going to do. He looks pass he looks shot, he reads these situations so well, and he almost always makes the right decision.

Jones wasn’t done there. He got his 13th of the season later in the period. Finishing off what was great rush from Boone Jenner and Thomas Vanek.

That was Jones’ third goal and fifth point in his last two games. He has taken his game to a new level these past few games. He’s making an impact both offensively and defensively. On top of those two goals he had a 58.33% Corsi at 5 on 5 and was on the ice for five scoring chances for and just one against.

The win is the Jackets fourth in a row and brings them to 77 points, one up on New Jersey for the first wild card. The Jackets are off this weekend so that spot is far from secure. There will be some serious scoreboard watching going on as the Devils take on the Predators and the Panthers play the Rangers tonight.
