Final Score: Senators 2 – Blue Jackets 0

Game Summary

Well not much to say about that one. The Jackets piled up 42 shots but were unable to get one past Mike Condon. Condon is not a great goalie but he’s played pretty well for Ottawa with a .919 save percentage. Last night was his third shutout of the year. For the Jackets it’s the third time this season they have been shutout.

The Jackets controlled the game right from the start with a 62.5% Corsi at 5 on 5 in the first period. The put up 13 shots in the period and had a couple decent chances. Ottawa though had a 1-0 on this goal by Kyle Turris.

Erik Karlsson makes a ridiculous pass here to send Turris on the breakaway. The Sens controlled the play in the second but the Jackets took back over in the third in their attempt to comeback. The Jackets finished the game outshooting Ottawa 42-28 and had a 56.73% Corsi.

This was a regression game of sorts for the Jackets. Chances that were going in for them during the streak were not tonight. The ones on the power play really stood out. The Jackets had three chances on the power play including a long 5 on 3 late in the third in which they couldn’t convert on. Their first power play they had the puck in the offensive zone for about 1:50 or basically the whole man-advantage. They were getting good looks but just seemed to be missing the net or getting blocked, and the of course the ones that did on net were gobbled right up by Condon.

Zach Werenski played well in this game, really standing out. He was a game time decision as he has been battling the flu but he was in the line-up and played 25:08. The second highest ice time he has played in a game season and just his third game over 25 minutes. The Jackets were a little light on defencemen as Markus Nutivaara missed another game with an injury, and David Savard missed a large chunk of the third for reasons still unknown.

Werenski played 5:00 on the power play and did not leave the ice for the last four minutes of the third. Between the power play and then the goalie pulled he was out there with the top power play unit looking to generate some offense.

The Jackets have a busy weekend ahead playing Carolina at home on Saturday and then in Ottawa Sunday in a re-match with the Senators.
