Blue Jackets to Buyout Jared Boll

The Blue Jackets have placed Jared Boll on unconditional waivers for the purposes of buying him out.

I discussed this move yesterday when talking about Fedor Tyutin. I would have rather seen the Blue Jackets just bury Boll in the AHL for a year and get the $900K cap relief and then have him off the books next season. But alas they didn’t go for that. This move saves the team about $1.1M this season but costs them about $500,000 the following season.

Say what you will about Boll (and I know I've said my fair share) he was one of the longest tenured Blue Jackets and will be missed by many fans.

Going forward this not only clears cap space but also clears a contract. The Blue Jackets now have roughly $4.5M in cap space and 45 contracts. They would be able to add a free agent in the $3Mish range if they want to go down that route. Ideally though they should just hold that cap space and look to sign players on the cheap, whether it be a free agent or a prospect (#SignSalituro).
