Yesterday the Blue Jackets placed defencemen Cody Goloubef on waivers.

This suggests that Goloubef is recovered from his injury that kept him out of the first two games this season. It remains to be seen if he is claimed or not. If I was to guess I would say he doesn’t get claimed, but I thought the same thing last season with Andrew Bodnarchuk and Kevin Connauton, both of whom were claimed.

Goloubef is the type of player who is inexperienced enough that a team might take a chance on him, but he’s older than you expect, and at this point might just be the player that he is. Goloubef is already 26 years old. He’s played 96 games in his NHL career, with two goals and 18 assists. He played in 43 games last season with the Jackets and had one goal and seven assists. Goloubef always looked good in his time in the NHL and had many people around the Blue Jackets thinking he could be a serviceable bottom pair defencemen.

Last season he had a 47.2% Corsi, per Corsica, which by itself isn’t great but when compared to the rest of the Jackets doesn’t look all bad. His Corsi Relative was -0.76, so he was just a little below average in terms of Corsi relative to the rest of the Jackets. He showed well when looking at both goals and scoring chances. When Goloubef was on the ice last season the Jackets scored 52.38% of the goals and generated 54.29% of the scoring chances.

The Jackets are currently carrying eight defencemen so keeping Goloubef around doesn’t make much sense. He’s at best the team’s fourth right shot defencemen. The Jackets, as things currently stand, don’t need another right shot, as they have been willing to play two left-handed defencemen together. That puts Goloubef behind both Markus Nuutivarra and Scott Harrington on the depth chart.

Odds are Goloubef won’t be claimed, but you never know if a defence-starved team like the Oilers or Avalanche would take a chance on him. If not, he will head to Cleveland and will be one of the first players called upon if an injury occurs.

UPDATE

Goloubef has cleared waivers.
