Blue Jackets make a trade

The Blue Jackets were off last night but the front office was busy, making a trade with the Colorado Avalanche. The two teams have swapped defencemen with Cody Goloubef going to Colorado and defencemen Ryan Stanton coming to Columbus.

Stanton was playing for the San Antonio Rampage after spending last season as a member of the Hershey Bears. He has played in 120 NHL games over parts of four seasons, seeing most of his time with the Vancouver Canucks from 2013-2015. He is a prototypical shutdown defencemen, who has just 27 career NHL points, and had just 16 points in 60 AHL games last season.

Stanton will report to Cleveland and will step right into Goloubef’s spot on the team. For Goloubef this is a chance for him to get back into the NHL. It was clear with the defensive depth on the Jackets Goloubef was not going to be playing in the NHL this season. Scott Harrington has been up with the Jackets all season and has only seen three games. Colorado does not have the same depth on the back-end so Goloubef has an easier path to NHL playing time. The Avalanche organization is filled with former Blue Jacket employees and would be very familiar with Goloubef’s game. Goloubef would also be familiar with Colorado’s Head Coach Jared Bednar who coached Goloubef when he was a member of the Blue Jackets AHL affiliates.

This is a nice change of scenery trade for players. It will give them a chance to re-establish themselves. For the Jackets hopefully Stanton can help jumpstart the defence in Cleveland which has struggled in the early going.
