Blue Jackets demote Alexander Wennberg; Campbell clears waivers

The Blue Jackets have trimmed their roster down to 23. They had to get creative to do so, and sent Alexander Wennberg to Cleveland. Pierre-Luc Dubois remains on the roster but is expected to be returned to the Cape-Breton Screaming Eagles this week. Wennberg was sent down as a cap move, he will be in the Blue Jackets line-up on opening night.

This is a very confusing situation and I will do my best to explain it. Dubois’ contract pays him up to $2.5 million in bonuses. Wennberg’s contract only pays him $475,000 in bonuses. This difference in bonuses puts the Blue Jackets very close to the cap ceiling.

The team then placed David Clarkson on the long-term injured reserved. Now when a player is placed on LTIR, you do not get cap relief. You only get cap relief if you go over the cap. So by getting as close to the cap as possible the Blue Jackets were able exceed the cap and get more cap relief.

The Blue Jackets now have $5,250,00M in cap space according to General Fanager. By sending Wennberg down and keeping Dubois they have gained an extra $2M in cap space.
Hopefully that helps clear up why this decision was made. For more information Aaron Portzline wrote about the move as well for the Columbus Dispatch.

In further news Gregory Campbell has cleared waivers and has been assigned to Cleveland. He will remain with the Monsters, presumably until there in an injury. Having Campbell in the minors isn’t the worst thing. He’s veteran and will really help teach the young players in the AHL how to be pro’s.
