MSG Network announced today that Brendan Burke will succeed Howie Rose as the New York Islanders play-by-play announcer.

The 32-year-old served as the AHL's Utica Comets announcer since 2013. He was honored as the AHL's "Most Outstanding Media Member" following last season.

The Fair Lawn, New Jersey native does have some NHL experience filling in as the St Louis Blues radio announcer from 2009-12.

It is an incredible honor to be joining MSG Networks and becoming part of the Islanders family,” said Burke. “It’s very humbling to think I am following in the footsteps of two of the all-time greats in Howie Rose and Jiggs McDonald. It has been a lifelong goal to be an NHL broadcaster and to come home to New York City, and to work for one of the NHL’s iconic franchises, is an absolute dream come true.”

Burke beat out former Islanders radio play-by-play announcer Steve Mears, current radio play-by-play announcer Chris King and Ed Cohen.

Rose, who served as the television play-by-play since 1995 announced he was stepping down in the spring.

I know some Islander fans will take issue with this hire. That it's not a big name. Lets remember Rose came from the Rangers.
