According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Islanders have signed defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to a one-year, one million contract.

The 35-year-old is currently playing with his new teammates Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss for Team Europe at the World Cup. The German was bought out by the Boston Bruins over the summer. He had two years remaining on his contract, with a cap hit of $4 million.

Getting Seidenberg for a million is a steal. He will provide depth and he's versatile. The lefthanded defensman can play both sides.

This signing could play out two ways though. Garth Snow could be on the verge of a trade or this pushes the bottom-pairing defensemen down a spot. The team already had eight defensemen before the signing. Adam Pelech will likely begin the season in Bridgeport with Scott Mayfield was slated the 7th defenseman. Mayfield signed a one-way deal over the summer and would have to clear waivers in order to play in Bridgeport. It is pretty likely that he would.

This signing cannot mean that Ryan Pulock begins the season in the press box or worse, in Bridgeport. He is still on his entry-level contract and does not require waivers. Snow has done this in the past. Anders Lee started the 2014-15 in Bridgeport.

In other news, The team returned defensemen Parker Wotherspoon, David Quenneville and Mitchell Vande Sompel back to their junior clubs.

Wotherspoon was selected in the 4th round of the 2015 draft. Quenneville was selected in the 7th round of this year's draft and Vande Sompel was selected in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft.

In the latest edition of the Isles Buzz podcast, we chat with producer Adam Scorgie about his documentary Ice Guardians.
