Islanders head to Washington

The great Lou Brown in Major League II once said "OK, we won a game yesterday. If we win today, it's called 'two in a row'. And if we win again tomorrow, it's called a "winning streak'... It has happened before!" The Islanders, winners of two straight, head to Washington to face the Capitals.

New York took their fans on an emotional roller coaster last night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. the Isles took a 3-0 lead into the third period and not surprising to anyone blew the lead. Anders Lee bailed out the team as he redirected Thomas Hickey's shot past Matt Murray with under 30 seconds left in the period. It was Lee's fourth goal in as many games.

The team needs points. As bad as they have been this season the Islanders are just five points out of the second wild card. The problem is, seven teams are ahead of them in that race. For the second time in three nights the Isles gained ground on every other team in the Eastern Conference.

Scott Mayfield stepped in for the injured Adam Pelech and played a solid game. He registered his first two assists of his NHL career. It's only a small sample size but if he can improve his skating he would be a solid third-pairing defenseman. The team has nine defensemen in their stable and really should look to move one (Travis Hamonic) for a winger. Hammer for James van Riemsdyk anyone?

Speaking of wingers, the Islanders best forward this season has been Josh Bailey, yes Josh Bailey. He has put up good numbers this season and has done the little things. Bailey already has 13 points and is on pace for his first 50-point season

Jack Capuano will not announce lineup until a couple of hours before the game. It would appear that the only change would be that Jaroslav Halak will start.
