The Islanders shut out the Bruins in Boston Monday for the first time in franchise history. The goalie to accomplish that feat is Thomas Greiss. The German goaltender made 32 saves in a 4-0 win over the Bruins. Greiss rebounded nicely after allowing seven goals in Raleigh Saturday night.
Greiss became the team's starting goalie when general manager Garth Snow waived Jaroslav Halak last month. Now that it's Greiss' job, the Islanders need to make sure that it's not just for the remainder of the season. Greiss is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Snow may not be the general manager when the calendar goes to July but he must lock Greiss up now. Greiss can be the two-to-three year bridge to Ilya Sorokin, who can come over from Russia following the 2017-18 season.
There is another impending free agent goaltender on the in Jean Francois Berube. When Halak was waived, Berube thought that he would received some more playing time. That has not been the case. He has not started since December 18. He is unlikely to play in the 30 games required to keep his status as a restricted free agent.
Jack Capuano started Greiss in seven straight games and in back-to-back games this weekend. Lets hope that Cappy does not burn Greiss out before the all-star break. Berube should start a game in a back-to-back scenario.
Knowing the Islanders like I do, Greiss will sign with another team in the offseason, Berube will play elsewhere and they will be left with a disgruntled Halak.
