The Chicago Blackhawks continue their pursuit of a top-six forward and they have talked to the Detroit Red Wings according to Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times. .

Two league sources told the Sun-Times the Hawks have had preliminary discussions about Red Wings wingers Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar. The Red Wings are in the market for a defenseman, and the Hawks have 10 or 11 NHL-ready blue-liners in Chicago and Rockford.

The Hawks already have been linked in talks to the Maple Leafs’ James van Riemsdyk, the Avalanche’s Jarome Iginla and the Stars’ Patrick Sharp, among others.

THE BUZZ – The Red Wings have needed defensive help for awhile. Their willingness to trade either Nyquist (under contract until 2019 at $4.75 Million) or Tatar (a RFA looking for a big payday this summer) is likely tied to their playoff chances(Detroit is just four points out of an Eastern Conference wild card spot).

The Hawks have Swedish defensive prospects in Gustav Forsling and Carl Dahlstrom that could be targets for the Wings, but a deal for Nyquist would likely necessitate trading a high draft pick and as Lazerus points out, Chicago hosts the NHL Draft this June.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday that Sabres GM Tim Murray had received inquiries on Robin Lehner after the goaltender was pulled in Toronto last week and stared down head coach Dan Bylsma. Murray shot down those inquiries.

THE BUZZ – Murray has a lot riding on the success or failure of Lehner, who he was familiar with as an Assistant GM in Ottawa and traded a 2015 first rounder (Colin White) to acquire him.

Lehner’s problems have more been durability than performance in Buffalo. He suffered a high ankle sprain and missed most of the first half of last season, was shut down early to have his ankle repaired at the end of the year and has made only 60% of the Sabres starts, below the normal workload of a #1 goaltender.

Statistically Lehner is playing well (2.52 GAA and .921 save percentage in 30 games) and the 24-year-old has the physical package that most NHL clubs are looking for in goal (6’5”, 239 lbs), but consistency has been an issue and he is a restricted free agent this summer. It is not unreasonable to think that Buffalo could choose to move on from Lehner and make a bid for one of the many goaltending options in free agency or via trade this summer.
