On Hockey Night in Canada’s Saturday Headlines, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the Coyotes may look to shop veteran Shane Doan as a rental before the March 1 deadline, but that Arizona will only go to him if they can place him with a team that has a legitimate chance to win a Stanley Cup. Doan has a no-trade clause and would have to waive it to make a trade possible.

THE BUZZ: Doan has been a loyal soldier for the Coyotes franchise, with 400th career goals and over 1500 games, and if the 40-year-old wants a shot at the Cup in what could be his final season, Arizona GM John Chayka has the ability to make it possible.

Doan does not have the speed he used to and would have to play a bottom six role for a contending team, but his salary is not onerous ($3.8 Million) and the Coyotes can retain up to 50% of the cap hit to make the dollars work. If the longtime assumption that Doan wants to stay in the Western Conference holds true, teams like Los Angeles, San Jose and Chicago make the most sense.

In Saturday’s Ottawa Sun, Bruce Garrioch speculates about whether the Tampa Bay Lightning will move pending UFA goalie Ben Bishop.

Making US$5.95 million, Bishop, 30, is a UFA on July 1 and there’s been plenty of speculation about his future because Andrei Vasilevskiy is poised to take over the No. 1 role next season. Word is the Dallas Stars made a call to the Bolts about Bishop but, if Tampa is going to trade him, GM Steve Yzerman is asking for a host of assets in return. After a trip to the East final last year, Tampa has to worry about making the playoffs so they may keep Bishop past the deadline because without him Friday night the club dropped a 3-1 decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets with Vasilevskiy in net

THE BUZZ – The Calgary Flames reportedly had a deal in place to acquire Bishop last summer, but went another direction, leaving GM Steve Yzerman with a similar dilemma that Pittsburgh has with Marc-Andre Fleury and Matt Murray. Without Steven Stamkos for the remainder of the regular season, Tampa will need every point to get into the top three of the Atlantic Division. Vasilevskiy’s youth and inconsistency could make keeping Bishop a necessity.

The Fourth Period says that Detroit Red Wings are preparing to be sellers when March 1 rolls around.

The Red Wings have not missed the playoffs since the 1989-90 season, but they currently sit six points back of third in the Atlantic Division and eight points back of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Holland has already taken calls on some of his players, one league source told TFP, with winger Thomas Vanek generating much interest.

THE BUZZ - There is no evidence that there will a dramatic change of fortune for the Red Wings before March 1. There is talent up front with rookie Anthony Mantha and sophomore Dylan Larkin, but their defense is thin and the goaltending of Petr Mrazek has let them down.

Vanek (10 goals, 17 assists in 31 games) should fetch a healthy return for those looking for a top six forward. Perhaps as much as a first round pick and a prospect. Rumors of interest from Chicago make perfect sense, since GM Stan Bowman is looking for a linemate for Jonathan Toews and Vanek makes a reasonable $2.6 Million.
