February 16, 2017

In this week’s edition of TSN’s Insider Trading, Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger report on the latest rumors of possible deals of the seven Canadian teams before the March 1 trade deadline.

Montreal – The Canadiens are looking for size up the middle and are exploring options like Arizona’s Martin Hanzal and Colorado’s Matt Duchene. They are also looking for defensive help, if it is possible with the price being so high for blueliners.

THE BUZZ – Hanzal or Patrick Berglund(if the Blues start dealing) would seem to be a fit for the Habs center problems, Duchene would likely cost GM Mark Bergevin a top prospect, an NHL defenseman like Nathan Beaulieu and a high draft pick.

Getting a top four defenseman could cost the Habs one or more of the five second round picks they have in the next two drafts.

Ottawa - Sens GM Pierre Dorion would love to add a scoring forward, especially with the loss of Clarke MacArthur for the season. Ottawa has a number of tantalizing prospects in their organization and Dreger indicates that they would be willing to move their 2017 first round pick or possibly forward Curtis Lazar.

THE BUZZ – A move for a cost effective forward like Radim Vrbata or Patrick Eaves would make a lot of sense for the fiscally disciplined Sens, but dealing for Duchene or Gabriel Landeskog will be pricey.

The Sun’s Bruce Garrioch reported this week that the Avalanche was looking for defenseman Cody Ceci, a first round pick and prospect Colin White or Thomas Chabot for Duchene, which is not realistic.

Toronto - McKenzie believes that the Leafs are a ‘discerning’ buyer, meaning only if the player addresses a need on a long term basis. Toronto is looking for a top four defenseman and a depth center if the price is economical.

THE BUZZ – The reported price of a first round pick for Tampa center Brian Boyle would be a non-starter for GM Lou Lamoriello, but they could go for a cheaper option like Colorado’s John Mitchell if they think it will help the Leafs make the post-season.

Edmonton - GM Peter Chiarelli would like to add a top-six forward to give him some flexibility and help his young team succeed in the playoffs. The Oilers may be willing to move defenseman Brandon Davidson because of expansion protection issues.

THE BUZZ – Some talk of the Oilers having interest in Boyle if the Lightning drop out of the race, but again a first round pick is a high price to pay.

Calgary - The Flames are looking for depth help at forward and defense to improve their playoff chances and according to LeBrun are willing to shop prospect goalies Jon Gillies or Mason McDonald.

THE BUZZ – Calgary should be able to fill their needs at the deadline, but the willingness to shop their prospect goalies with both Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson unrestricted free agents this summer is indicative of the Flames likely trying to sign a Ben Bishop or trade for Marc-Andre Fleury this summer.

Vancouver - McKenzie believes the Canucks are trending towards being a seller on March 1, but they also could use a pending UFA like Ryan Miller or Alex Burrows or defenseman Ben Hutton to add some much needed speed up front.

THE BUZZ – Hutton would be a curious option for teams looking for defensive help. The 23-year-old signed a two-year bridge deal for $2.8 Million per season and is on pace to exceed his 25 point total as a rookie, but the Canucks are likely looking for a comparably aged skilled forward in exchange.

Winnipeg - The Jets are without Tyler Myers and in spite of their playoff chances being slim, they are looking to add a top-four defenseman. They will likely shop pending UFA’s Drew Stafford and Ondrej Pavelec or forward Mathieu Perreault.

THE BUZZ – GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has enough prospect depth in his organization to make a deal for a defenseman possible, but that kind of trade is more likely to happen over the summer.
