The Toronto Maple Leafs have completed the long been rumored trade of Matt Martin, sending the veteran winger back to the New York Islanders for minor league goaltender Eamon McAdam.

The 29-year-old Windsor native scored 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists) in 50 games for the Leafs last season, but saw his role on the fourth line evaporate after the All-Star break with rookies Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson getting an opportunity.

With the deal, the Leafs clear $2.5 Million cap hit for the next two seasons, but Martin is only owed $1 Million in base salary after being paid his $1.5 Million signing bonus on Sunday.

McAdam was a third round pick of the Islanders in 2013 and played three years at Penn State University before signing his entry-level deal in 2016.

The 23-year-old has played mostly in the ECHL the past two seasons, but started nine games for the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers last year.

With the deal, the Leafs have six goaltenders under contract in their organization; Frederik Andersen, Curtis McElhinney, Calvin Pickard and Garret Sparks on one-way deals, Kasimir Kaskisuo and McAdam on two-way deals.

This fact gives more weight to the speculation that Toronto may deal Sparks (the AHL’s Baz Bastien Award winner and Calder Cup champion) or Pickard as part of a package to acquire some defensive help.

The Toronto Marlies continued to stockpile players on Tuesday, signing seven players (Emerson Clark, Zach O’Brien, Ryan Moore, Hudson Elynuik, Giorgio Estephan, as well as defencemen Sam Jardine and Stefan LeBlanc) to AHL contracts.

Clark (26) and O’Brien(25), Jardine (24) split time between the ECHL and AHL last season. LeBlanc, 22, played 220 games over four seasons for the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads before playing 56 games for the AHL’s Laval Rockets in 2017-18.

Moore, 21, played for four OHL clubs over five seasons, including the OHL Champion Hamilton Bulldogs, for which he scored 39 points (10 goals, 29 assists) in 42 games. Estephan played five seasons in the WHL (mostly for the Lethbridge Broncos), finishing with a pair of 80+ point seasons.

Elyniuk,20, is the most intriguing of the signings. The son of former NHLer Pat Elynuik, the 6’5”, 195 lb center was a 2016 third round pick of Carolina and scored 86 points (31 goals, 55 assists) with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs, but re-entered the NHL Draft and went undrafted after not signing an entry-level deal with the Hurricanes.
