The Leafs have placed wingers David Clarkson and Frazer McLaren on the injured reserve with undisclosed injuries.

This is the latest of setbacks for the 29-year-old Mimico, ON native, who thus far has not lived up to expectations after signing a seven year, $36.75 Million contract with the Leafs last July.

The power forward has been suspended twice; 10 games for leaving the bench during a pre-season game with the Buffalo Sabres and another two games in mid-December for a head hit on Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka, but has been hampering by illness and injury as well.

Clarkson took a shot off his left foot against the New York Rangers on January 4 and missed one game. He is also one of the many Toronto players who was struck with the flu bug and was nearly scratched prior to Tuesday's 4-3 win over Boston, but the apparent reason for being placed on the injured list was the elbow injury suffered in mid-December(graphically displayed on HBO's 24/7).

The Leafs winger told Devils beat reporter Tom Guilitti on Sunday that he might have miss some time to get bursa sac removed, the same injury that occurred with teammate Colton Orr.

Clarkson has three goals and five assists in 36 games for Toronto this season.

The 26-year-old McLaren saw just 2:40 of ice time in Toronto's 4-3 victory over Boston on Tuesday and dropped the gloves with Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton in the first period.

McLaren missed all of preseason and the first 10 games of the regular season with a broken finger courtesy of a slash from teammate Carter Ashton, so it is possible that his hand was re-injured in the bout with Thornton.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has no points and 67 penalty minutes for the Leafs in 22 games.

Sportsnet Fan 590's David Alter reports that the Leafs may recall wingers Jerry D'Amigo, Troy Bodie and/or Jamie Devane to replace Clarkson and McLaren.

The Toronto Marlies are in the middle of a seven-game Midwest road swing and play the Chicago Wolves on Friday night.
