After ten days on the road and yesterday’s day off it was back to work for everyone. The media had a chance to catch up with Terry Murray and the players following practice at the Toyota Sports Center this morning

Coach Murray changed things up by having Dustin Brown skate on a line with Handzus and Frolov while Stoll was now sandwiched between Teddy Purcell and Wayne Simmonds.

Of course, the big topic of discussion was the benching of Alexander Frolov.

Coach Murray stated, “When we spoke in Dallas and the conversation was “you’re coming out of the lineup", it was important for me to leave an opening in the door and that was, “whenever you’re ready to come back, knock on my door, come and sit down, look me in the eye, talk to me and tell me you’re ready to get going and play the game I know you’re capable of bringing.”

“That’s what happened here this morning," Murray stated. "He come in, knocked on my door, wanted to talk for a few minutes, we had a good discussion.”

When Frolov was asked if his discussion went well, he responded, “I think for sure it was productive. Now I’ll get ready for the game tomorrow”

Murray stated that Frolov will indeed be in the lineup tomorrow.

“It’s effort,” Murray continued. “I want 100% of commitment with effort, intensity, emotionally… we gotta have that commitment if we’re going to make things work here… we talk about changing the culture… we need a total buy in by all the players.”

“The decision I made in the Dallas game I’m very comfortable with and its what I needed to do for the team. Nobody is bigger than the team. That’s the reason why I made the decision.”

How did Frolov take the benching? “Nobody likes to be scratched and be in the locker room. It’s really frustrating for any player. I didn’t have this experience for a long long time. It’s the head coaches decision. You have to respect it.”

I asked veteran newcomer Rob Scuderi about the controversy surrounding Frolov. "When the coaches see a lot of mental mistakes, they're going to make their point heard", he began. "Fro's a professional, but I'm sure he's going to come back. He made a couple of mistakes, he knows about it, he knows the coaches are upset about it and I'm sure he's going to come back stronger for it. We all need him to do that. If we're going to be a successful team, he has to make an impact. We're all pulling for him."

Murray added, “I’m not trying to butt heads with anybody, I’m trying to get players to be the best they can be and I’m trying to put demands on players that this is what the L.A. Kings need to do to be successful. This is about 23 guys buying in, being on page and working hard for each other and looking at each other in the eye after the game and saying “I did my best for you out there tonight”. I’ve got to have that.”

Drew Doughty returned, but with a few less teeth caused by a tipped puck that hit him square in the face. “To tell you the truth, it didn’t even hurt,” Doughty began. “It happened so fast and I started spitting out teeth. It wasn’t too bad until I had to fix them. That’s when it hurt”.

All hockey players carry battle scars. When asked if this was his first war wound, Doughty replied, “I don’t know if I look at it like that but it’s definitely one of the worst ones I’ve had. Luckily I haven’t had my teeth knocked out until the other day so I’ve been doing well so far.” Doughty stated he still may have to have his two front ones pulled. Ouch.

Lost in the road trip was the mysterious "lower body injury" that's kept newcomer Alec Martinez out of the lineup. Leave it to Hall of famer Helene Elliott to pry it out of Murray.

"He has a sprained ankle. Falling into the boards after practice doing a defenseman's drill. He tried to skate the next day and it wasn't even close. He stayed behind with our 3rd medical staff person. It's coming but it's an ankle sprain. Sometimes it takes a long time."

Murray also mentioned to Helene Elliott the other day that he wasn't happy with the way Erik Ersberg played in the Rangers game and regretted his decision. When asked to elaborate on that today Murray stated, "I was wishing I would have stayed with Quicker who was playing well".

With three games coming up in the next four nights, Murray was asked if Ersberg would get a start. "I'm playing Quick right now. I had a plan that was penciled in... but I erased it."

When asked if he's lost confidence in Ersberg, Murray paused before stating, "I need him to be looking really, really good in practice. He's got to be right on top of things right now. It's been a long time between a win for him, going back to December last year. I really need to see an "a" game (from him) in practice".

Murray admitted Ersberg's been battling the flu, so when asked if there's been discussion if the Kings would bring up Bernier? "No, there's not."
