Dear Toronto fans - Burke tried, he didn't want to overpay (thank God for you) and then took a player that rival Murray wanted (what fun!)

But Maple Leafs hot stove (to his credit, Garrett did put in a BOLD disclaimer) states:
"Last night, a source suggested that the two teams were talking, and this afternoon those talks were confirmed, with Kaberle and Schenn supposedly the key components of the deal."

"One source claims that Lombardi was later overheard admitting he took Schenn out of spite." -

"Sources also pointed out that Los Angeles, having plenty of youth, was particularly interested in trading veteran players with eyes to making a run at the playoffs."

Let's review:

#1) GM's don't take 1st round, top 5 players out of "spite", especially Lombardi.

#2) Yes, Burke made an offer to Lombardi but obviously not enough to grab the player the Kings wanted: "We got the two players (Schenn and Clifford) we were targeting", said Lombardi. So that means, they most likely didn't want Kane. I know, I know, what else was Lombardi going to say, right? They wanted Schenn. Period.

Lombardi has been preaching "build from within" so as far as what could have been offered, why would he need Kaberle? They have Doughty AND Johnson AND Hickey AND Voinov AND Teubert... and ALL of them don't make 4.25 million for the next 2 years when the cap is expected to go DOWN next season AND if he does want a top 4 D-man, there are quite a few he can sign July 1st AND they Kings aren't expected to contend for the Stanley Cup this coming season anyway, so Kaberle would be here for one cup run? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

The Kings admitted needing scoring FORWARDS and I don't believe there was anyone on Toronto's roster that Dean was looking to acquire for Schenn (taking nothing away from Hagman, Stajan and Ponikarovsky).

#3) Lombardi, as stated in my interview with his this past week has ZERO interest in "making the playoffs" - His goal is to go FAR into the playoffs year after year. He talked about how Atlanta mortgaged their future by trading Coburn and then were swept... and then were picking just before him!

#4) Toronto got a great prospect in Kadri. What's wrong with drafting a great player? Are Toronto fans NOT going to re-up their season tickets because two brothers aren't playing together? No! They have their season tickets in their WILL!

#5) Lets say Burke offered the #7 pick and his #1 pick NEXT year. Hard to balk at, right? But Burke admitted earlier he was looking to ACQUIRE picks, not give them away.

Brayden Schenn is everything Dean Lombardi loves in a player. Kyle Clifford as well.

There are no 3-way deals, Heatley is not coming to L.A., and Schenn is going to kick butt in a Kings uniform for a very long time.
