...and a 5th

Quincey was a free asset and dump Preissing's salary - Smyth is 33 years old with a 6.25 cap hit for the next 3 seasons

Well, I was 20% right in my blog this morning - I knew Lombardi loved the guy, and the price was certainly right.

My take:

Kings grab a hard working playmaker with a high cap hit but with a declining salary over the next 3 seasons (6.5, 5.5, 4.5) until Schenn is ready to step in.

This also gives the Kings two solid lines:
Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Brown-Stoll-Frolov

As a Kings representative just e-mailed me: "We should be a playoff team and people should expect it."

As much as Quincey was a welcome addition to the Kings last season, its now time for Jack Johnson to take those minutes he lost due to injury and show everyone what Jack Johnson is made of.

There are many rumors surrounding Jack Johnson, but Lombardi talks about him like he's a long term player. When the Kings announce a multi-year deal, maybe it will get people to shut up for a while. I'm sure Jack would love to play for Detroit or with his friend Syd the Kid. I want a private island in Fiji.

Tom Preissing was destined for Manchester and Lombardi said he would move him and he did. If Colorado was dumping salary, so were the Kings.

The Kings got the additional veterans they needed. Now Moller can grow properly in Manchester instead of being rushed to the NHL. Hickey and Voinov can get seasoning and the Kings can finally make the playoffs.

Dean Lombardi should be applauded for this move. Yes, he took on a large cap hit, but it was certainly better than dealing away any of his "core" for Heatley or Sturm or (fill in the blank).

Oh, and for those who are wondering, Biron ain't coming to the Kings either.

I wonder if the people who blew up Lombardi's e-mail today are feeling a little silly!

Oh, and to my good friend smitty, who had THIS to say when I wrote THIS MORNING about Smyth coming to L.A........
Look I know L.A. might be a joke to some hockey fans but its not to the real Kings fans, so if your gonna write crap about L.A. at least know what your talking about.
Guess what, smitty... there's a REASON I'm here :)

And to you Toronto natives who say this repeatedly...
Lombardi will not do it. No jam, he fears making a mistake. He is in way over his head and it will all slip through his fingers before people realize just how gun shy this guy really is.
He just did, so shhhhhhhhh. The Kings should make the playoffs this year. Toronto shouldn't.

This weekend just got a bit better! Time to bust out a nice 1997 Italian red!

Added: Just thought of this.... all of those those teams that were hoping to dump some of their overpriced players on the Kings just missed out. Of course, they probably never would have taken Quincey, Preissing and a 5th, but the options for Philadelphia, Calgary, Boston and others just got slimmer by one.

My lord is Chicago going to regret that Brian Campbell signing.

Added Part 2: The Kings were 20-31 in one goal games (not counting EN but counting SO) last season. Turn that around THIS season and the Kings have the 3rd best record in the conference. Smyth should certainly help.
