Controversy Surrounds Kings 2-1 OT Win

The Kings rebounded from their shellacking yesterday in Atlanta to defeat the Lightning in a shootout 2-1.

With both teams playing solid defense, it took until the 3rd period on a 4 on 3 power play for Drew Doughty to stake the Kings to a 1-0 lead (with help from, who else, Kopitar and Smyth). Ryan Malone tied the score at the 11:39 mark and the game went onto overtime.

And the controversy began.

Lightning rookie Victor Hedman passed the puck to Andrej Meszaros at the top of the blue line, and he shot it towards the front of the net. Paul Szczechura was standing in front of Kings netminder Jonathan Quick. The puck hit either Dustin Brown's stick or Kings defenseman Matt Greene and then appeared to hit off Sean O’Donnell and into the net.

The referee, standing goalside, signaled goal.

The Lightning were celebrating and started to head towards the dressing room while Jonathan Quick was protesting.

For some strange reason, the same referee called goaltender interference, which was certainly not Szczechura’s fault since he was pushed into Quick by O’Donnell.

The overtime period ended and the shootout began. Kopitar scored first and it turned out to be the only puck that would wind up in the net. Jon Quick stopped 29 shots.

"It's amazing to me how incompetent these guys (referees)are?" Tampa analyst Bobby Taylor said following the game. "They never get any better, these officials. Never get any better."

Paul Szczechura said, "Looking at the replay, I was pushed. The referee signaled goal."

Zenon Konopka stated, "If it was goalie interference, why was there no penalty called? It's pretty fishy. I don't know if he got pressured by the L.A. Kings but obviously its disgusting and it leaves a bad taste in our mouths"

Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi left the game in the 1st period with a “lower body injury” and did not return.
