Day 2 of the Draft started for the Oilers with Tyler Benson 32nd overall. He has solid size at 6'0 201 pounds but he was injured most of last year.

Benson only played 30 games for the Vancouver Giants but potted 28 points for them. He was initially supposed to go higher before injuries killed those chances. The injury that took him down was a tailbone cyst. He returned after 2 months but a "lower body injury" possibly related to the cyst surgery forced him to shut his game down completely in February.

At 63 the Oil took Markus Niemelainen. Niemelainen is a 6'6" 200 pound left shooting defender. He picked up 27 points in 65 games with Saginaw.

84th Matthew Cairns. 6'2" 200 pound LHD from OJHL and is going to Cornell in a couple years.

91st Filip Berglund a RHD from the Swedish Jr league where he netted 41 points in 43 games. Berglund is 6'3" 209 pounds.

123rd Dylan Wells. Goaltender from the Peterborough Petes with a 16-28-2-5 record, 4.28 GAA & .882 sv% in 54 career games. The numbers are ugly but goalies are volatile. He could win the Vezina next year and I would only be mildly surprised. He's 6'2" so he's within range of having NHL size. Can he stop pucks? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

149 Graham McPhee. Left Wing headed for down the College route. 5'11" and not quite 180. He's undersized but has Hockey in his blood.

153 Aapeli Rasanen. Center from Finland with a focus on solid 2-way play. Projects to be a bottom 6 player with PK ability. 38 points in 50 games in the Finnish Jr league.

183 Vincent Desharnais. Defenseman with size. Overage RHD who comes in at 6'6" and 207 pounds. He had 2 points in 19 games with Providence College this year.

There were no Oiler trades and the team used all of their picks. That's probably the biggest shock of the draft. Edmonton still has not addressed their very serious concerns about the defense.

With the free agent shopping window open now, there are still a lot of moving parts out there. If Edmonton gets a good feeling from Demers it might prevent them from doing anything bold. If they feel shut out then it might force their hand.
