“DE-TROIT SUCKS”

Not sure why Blackhawk fans kept referring to Detroit’s football franchise while attending an NHL playoff game. They surely could not have been referring to the Detroit Red Wings after the clinical performance put forth yesterday afternoon in Game 4 to attain a stranglehold of this Western Conference Final series.

Most teams would have difficulty playing a pivotal road playoff game without their top two players. Their leading point getter and top defensive forward, Pavel Datsyuk. Their top defensemen and best overall player, Nicklas Lidstrom.

The Red Wings response to such a situation is a 6-1 drubbing of the Blackhawks.

Now I’m not going to suggest Detroit could sustain a significant period of time without the services of Datsyuk and Lidstrom. However, few other teams (if any) could post a performance such as the one we saw in Game 4.

Marian Hossa continues his mastery of Game 4’s with another two-goal outing to pace the Wings offensively, including the “dagger” twelve seconds following the ‘Hawks Jonathan Toews cut the deficit to 3-1. Valteri Filppula continued his terrific playoff production with a three-point night filling in for Datsyuk between Hossa and Tomas Holmstrom. Filppula now has 13 points in 15 playoff games and has picked up his offensive game at an opportune time given Datsyuk’s struggles offensively. Johan Franzen scored yet another game-winner to bring his two-year playoff total to 23 goals in 31 playoff games.

What I am trying to get at here is there is depth and then there is DEPTH. Chicago has a very good young team with good depth and plenty of talent. They need to do something to address all of the money tied up in goaltending, but this club has a bright future. This learning experience will only help, although likely not soon enough to help them win 3 consecutive games versus the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

As for Detroit, how about the performance out of the likes of Brad Stuart and Niklas Kronwall? For all of the controversy surrounding Kronwall’s hit on Martin Havlat in Game 3, Kronwall appeared to be not the least bit concerned yesterday afternoon playing his typical game. Nice open-ice hit on Patrick Kane, 2 assists, 23 minutes.
As for Stuart, he may in fact be one of Detroit’s best players thus far in the postseason. He has been an absolute stud defensively. This guy is Detroit’s supposed #4 d-man? Now THAT is DEPTH.

One final comment. How good is Chris Osgood making Ken Holland look right now for only spending $2 million total on his goaltending duo for this season?
