Morrison Will Not Tryout For Leafs

As we get closer to the start of training camp, speculation has begun on if the current roster of the Toronto Maple Leafs will be the one that Leafs GM Brian Burke brings into camp.

Burke has sent mixed messages in many interviews, saying that he is happy with the current roster, specifically his additions since January which include Dion Phaneuf, J.S. Giguere, Kris Versteeg, and Colby Armstrong. But at the same time he knows there are some issues the team needs to address. Specifically upfront at the forward positions.

There are a few different ways those holes could be addressed. Through free agency, or a trade, or even through a pro tryout at training camp.

Earlier Friday, HockeyBuzz's Mike Augello pointed out that the Leafs had given a tryout to former Leaf Jason Allison in 2009. However it was not meant to be and Allison was cut.

There have been rumours circulating that the Leafs are either looking at extending invites or have already extended invites to free agents Brendan Morrison and former Leaf Darcy Tucker to attend this year's camp.

As has been widely reported, Darcy Tucker's agent had approached the Leafs earlier this summer. The response was lukewarm, but nothing was worked out. Tucker's agent has not responded as to whether his client would tryout for the Leafs.

That is not the case however for free agent center Brendan Morrison.

Morrison's agent, Kurt Overhardt, told me that the rumours of the Leafs extending an invite to tryout to his client were "not true."

When asked if Morrison would go on a tryout for the Leafs, Overhardt told me it was "not going to happen."

Morrison would be a great addition to the Leafs, as he would provide a great veteran presence in an otherwise young group of forwards. With 42 points last season in Washington, Morrison would go a long way to helping solidify the Leafs up the middle at the center position.

If Morrison is to become a Leaf however and fill some holes, it would have to be through being signed, as a tryout seems to be a very unlikely option.
