Leafs Not Afraid To Hang On To Kaberle

As the August 15th window to trade Tomas Kaberle approaches, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke tells me that the club has a considerable amount of offers on the table for Kaberle.

On Monday it was reported that the offers for Kaberle were in the double digits which Burke confirmed to me today.

In the past, the Leafs GM has noted that some offers for Kaberle have not been all that serious and that the Leafs would not be considering them at all. That does not seem to be the case this time around.

Brian tells me that all the offers he has for Kaberle seem serious, but are improving as Sunday, August 15th approaches. He is optimistic that he will get one he likes.

If that does not happen however, it is entirely possible Tomas Kaberle remains a Leaf. Burke said that if he does not get an offer that he likes, he will "just hang on to the player."

The reasons behind either trading or keeping Tomas Kaberle seem pretty clear. You can never have too many defencemen, especially a top defenceman who can eat up a lot of minutes. The Leafs could use another top six forward however, which they would likely be able to acquire in a deal for Kaberle.

On Monday, Ilya Kovalchuk once again became an unrestricted free agent when his 17-year, $102 million contract was voided thanks to the ruling of an arbitrator. I posed the question if Kovalchuk being a UFA once again impacts the Leafs' ability to trade Kaberle. Burke said there was "no impact of note with regard to Kovalchuk."

Stay tuned to HockeyBuzz.com all this week for around the clock coverage on the possible trading of Tomas Kaberle.
