Though he’s played in 13 fewer games than Kris Versteeg of the Chicago Blackhawks, Bobby Ryan is now tied with Versteeg in points (with 50). Tonight, Ryan had two goals (his third multi-goal game of the season), bringing him up to Versteeg’s point total. In spite of how exciting it must be to compete for the rookie scoring title, Bobby Ryan is clearly much more concerned with his team getting into the playoffs and getting those all important wins. He’s amazingly humble and composed for a rookie. Perhaps that’s because he’s waited a bit longer to get to the NHL than many of his counterparts. Regardless of the reason, Bobby Ryan is a very important part of the Ducks’ team and if they make it into the playoffs, he’ll definitely be a large factor in the team achieving that goal.
Along those lines, the Ducks are currently in 9th place in the western conference, one point behind the 8th place Blues. They’re even in games played with the teams directly above and below them in the standings, so they’ll need a bit of help from one or more of the teams ahead of them in the standings to make the playoffs. The Predators and the Blues both won tonight, but Edmonton did lose to the Wild, allowing the Ducks to move into 9th and they play the Oilers on Tuesday, so they’ll have their own fate in their hands as they did when they lost to the Oilers on Friday. Something tells me that in spite of Randy Carlyle standing by Giguere and refusing to in any way admit that Jonas Hiller has been the better goalie (by far) this season for the Ducks, Hiller will be in goal for the Ducks this time as they face the Oilers.
Only one team in the western conference (the Colorado Avalanche) has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in the west so far, though I’m sure if one takes into account the reality of some of the teams ahead of them playing each other between now and the end of the season teams would be eliminated mathematically more quickly. In spite of that fact, the western conference competition is very tight and every game from here until the end of the season in 2 weeks is critical for the teams in the playoff race.
