To my surprise, the Blackhawks selected Adam Boqvist with the 8th overall pick with Oliver Wahlstrom.

I'm not surprised of the pick, because let's be honest, it shouldn't be a shock that the Blackhawks took a Swedish defenceman. I thought they were sold on Oliver Wahlstrom but I guess Boqvist was a notch above him on their list.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Adam Boqvist selection will look amazing in 2-3-years. He has the potential to be an elite defenceman in the NHL and has that offensive "attack" that they Hawks have desperately needed for years.

I know it will all shake out eventually, but it's interesting to see the Hawks now have 3 small(ish) RHD that are all projected to be in the league in 2-3 years. They better line up those righties with some Dave Manson type defenders opposite of them.

I was told that Bowman was looking for a deal for a defenceman by using that 27th overall pick but couldn't find any takers. It was actually a really boring draft in that regard.

Instead, the Hawks took another defenceman (whew, at least it's a lefty this time) that they had eyed up in Nicolas Beaudin.

Mark Lazerus actually had an article 6 days ago predicting that the Hawks were going to take Beaudin.

The Hawks appear to be loading up on defence and this trend has carried on from the last couple of years. I don't think any of us will be complaining when the Hawks are in a situation like Nashville or Anaheim with a plethora of young defencemen that either improve the team on the ice or can be used as a trade chip.

I really was expecting the Hawks to take a forward and a defenceman if they were to use both picks but I guess it's all on how the draft played out.

Stan Bowman commented yesterday saying that he is looking to package picks to get into the 2nd round. We'll see if he can make that happen.

I anticipate there will be more movement today. There's a chance that the Hawks actually find a roster player tomorrow as well. Stan seemed keen on making a move but as mentioned above, it didn't appear there were many dance partners.

The 2nd draft starts at 11am EST. I will have more information and updates as I hear them.
