Productive Procrastination

When I was in college, my roommates called me the most productive procrastinator they knew. I always had a list of things I needed or wanted to do and I would then label them as an A - something I must do, B - something I should do or C - something I could do if I had time. Nerdy, I know, but it was effective :)

So if I had a paper or project that I had to do and didn't really want to do it at the moment, rather than watch a movie or something else equally unproductive, I'd turn to my C List which usually consisted of clean my room, do laundry, etc. Once I realized that I didn't actually want to do those tasks either, I bumped them to the D List and made the C List things I actually wanted to do but never really had time for...hobbies, if you will...So, while I may not have been doing what I was supposed to be doing, I was at least being productive about my procrastination and checking things off my To Do List. I'm kind of sneaky like that ;)

What does any of that have to do with anything, you ask? Well today, I'm going to help you be a productive procrastinator. After all...who really wants to work on a Friday??

To get you started, do yourself a favor and browse through this AMAZING photo gallery...be sure to read the little blurbs about each photo...you just might learn something :) Also if you're in the DC area or will be visiting there before May 3, 2009 be sure to stop by the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History to check out the full display. As always, the Smithsonian museums are free.

Now, if you're looking for a fun HOCKEY photo gallery, check out the photo diary of the Vancouver Canucks on their current road trip...

Day One

Day Two

Day Three

Day Four

Here are some interesting articles I've come across this week...

Jason Blake Recalls Fond Days at North Dakota

"Bring up North Dakota hockey to Maple Leafs forward Jason Blake and watch his face light up. He'll drop whatever he's doing at that moment to talk. Forget the fact that his game has been struggling of late and on more than one occasion this season he's found himself in the press box as a healthy scratch. If you want to chat about his time in Grand Forks (1996-99), Blake is more than willing to travel to a period of his life he still cherishes dearly."

Air Force's Jacques Lamoureux Battled Back From the Abyss

"The pond across the street from the Lamoureuxs' house in Grand Forks, N.D., served as something of a sanctuary for the six hockey-playing siblings.

The four boys and twin girls would stash their skates and sticks in a nearby snow bank and - instead of walking to Sunday school - would dash to the pond for a quick scrimmage.

When Jacques, the second-oldest boy, joined an after-dinner game on Thanksgiving in 2003, they had no idea that an hour earlier he had parked at the top of a six-story garage, placed his goodbye letter on the dashboard and stepped onto the ledge.

They didn't know that was the night Jacques Lamoureux chose to live."

Progress Positive for Canes' Williams

"Justin Williams jumps out of his truck and comes bounding into the Athletic Performance Center in North Raleigh, his cap on backward, bearing a smile and eager to work.

To be sure, this is not where Williams wants to be on a November afternoon. Earlier in the day, he was skating at the RBC Center, stickhandling and shooting the puck. It's a game day, with the Carolina Hurricanes to face the Montreal Canadiens."

Hardline Defenceman Union's Voice of Reason

"Ask an NHL forward who has tried to insulate himself between Robyn Regehr and the end boards. The six-foot-four defenceman makes a definite impression.

And when he's not pancaking hapless forwards, Regehr is also in the business of making an impression around the league. In the years since the ill-fated lockout of 2004-05, Regehr has become perhaps the most influential player in the league. Chris Chelios may get the headlines, but behind the closed doors of the NHL Players Association the Flames veteran defenceman has become the go-to guy."

Return to Sender for NHL on Luongo Petition

"I watched a lot of James Bond movies when I was a kid and imagined that if I were ever dispatched to New York as a courier, I'd have a briefcase full of money or spy secrets handcuffed to one wrist and From Russia with Love's Tatiana Romanova latched to the other.

Instead, I walked alone up the canyon of Sixth Avenue to National Hockey League headquarters and delivered a petition signed by 2,250 Vancouver Sun readers demanding that Canuck goalie Roberto Luongo be recognized as captain. Hey, it's a living."

Burke's bound for the Buds

"The day after the National Hockey League trade deadline two years ago, Brian Burke answered a call - possibly on the first ring - from a Vancouver writer desperate for context and a rollicking good quote about the frenzy that saw the Atlanta Thrashers sacrifice two first-round picks, a second and a third to rent Keith Tkachuk.

Burke thus hit the hanging curve ball: "Short-term rentals are like kamikaze pilots: You have them only once, then they're gone. I prefer an aircraft that can land, refuel, then take off again."

And when the grateful writer regained control of his pen and fretted that this nugget had already appeared in newspapers and sportscasts across Southern California, Burke explained: "I said it yesterday, but nobody printed it. Feel free to use it."

He was never a good fit in Anaheim, unless you count the hockey part.

He hates golf, burns in the sun and too few people quote him there."

The last two columns were written by the same person, Iain MacIntyre, of the Vancouver Sun. Needless, to say I find him quite funny!

I'll be back in a bit with some college hockey news to help you further your mission for the day of being a productive procrastinator and accomplishing nothing of significance, but hopefully learning something in the process :)

Till then!
