We sit two hours away from the Islanders jumping on the clock. We've heard very little from the Stars the past week regarding the draft. Here is what we do know though:

1. The Stars don't plan any movement.

That doesn't mean they won't entertain a small trade down. Why would they announce that they plan to move? A wealth of talent appears headed to the 8 spot in the draft. If a team in the 9-12 range is willing to part with a 2nd or early 3rd round pick to move up bet on the Stars taking it.

2. In reference to number 1, there will be a wealth of talented prospects at #8.

The top 5 in the draft seem relatively set, but there is a pool of about 8 players after that which could go anywhere from #6 to #13. It seems natural to entertain a trade down with so many talented players available.

3. The Stars have emphasized that they will take the best player available regardless.

If Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson is on the board and no one drops he could end up in Dallas. Good. Sort out the roster later.

4. The Stars are looking at skill at #8.

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News got that nugget out of the Stars this past week. They want to take the most skilled player they can because they believe they can get gritty players later. Sound logic. As Mike put it, why pay a 1st rounder 800k to do a job a free agent could do for less?

Tonight should be an interesting night. I no longer think Jared Cowan is much of an option in Dallas. If they keep the pick then Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, Dmitry Kulikov, and Jordan Schroeder are my 3 favorites.

I didn't get much of a response about doing the draft live, but it appears that it will be done by various other dignitaries tonight. I'll jump back in here when we have some action.

Happy Draft 2009.
