Free Agent Names to Consider |

Quickly this morning, before the madness begins (that's madness elsewhere, heavily tempered madness around these parts) ...
A list of free agent names to consider, updated slightly from
Monday's free agency preview, for the Tampa Bay Lightning in specific areas of need, 5 reasonable targets and one stretch for each:
Veteran defensemen:
Christian Backman,
Francois Beauchemin,
Steve Eminger,
Paul Mara,
Mattias Ohlund
Stretch: Mike Komisarek
I'd actually call Ohlund somewhat of a stretch too but it looks like Komisarek might benefit from the whopper of a deal
Jay Bouwmeester got in Calgary.
Backup goaltender:
Craig Anderson,
Yann Danis,
Wade Dubielewicz,
Antero Niittymaki,
Andrew Raycroft
Stretch:
Nikolai Khabibulin
Nik's a stretch because he'll likely want too much money and more playing time than the Lightning will offer. He could re-sign in Chicago as well, making
Cristobal Huet expendable. But a Khabibulin return would sure make fans living in the past pretty happy.
Second line scoring winger:
Maxim Afinogenov,
Erik Cole,
Brian Gionta,
Chad Larose,
Mikael Samuelsson
Stretch:
Marian Gaborik
Gaborik would only become a possibility for Tampa if he gets overlooked during the first wave or two of signings and the market fizzles out a bit. Vancouver remains my call for this oft-injured, dynamic forward.
Depth forwards:
Dan Hinote, Tom Kostopolous,
Travis Moen,
Chris Neil,
Joel Ward
Stretch:
Mark Recchi
Recchi worked out quite well for the Lightning last year, both in terms of production as well as the assets that were acquired by trading him to Boston at the deadline. An unknown level of interest, from either side, in doing it all over again is what makes this a stretch. Mark has indicated a desire to return to the Bruins and the team is showing at least a mild interest. Nevertheless, the Bolts could do far worse.
