What a great night that was!
John Tavares, Victor Hedman, Matt Duchene, 1-2-3. Just as I said it would go. Granted, that wasn't much of a stretch but, after so much speculation, it was nice to see it play out like that in the end. The New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche all got phenomenal players with their top picks and, probably, exactly what they all needed.
I spoke with Hedman about an hour or so after he was selected and the excitement in his voice made my evening.
Aside from adding a key piece to their puzzle, the Lightning made a solid move in getting back into the first round (as I predicted they'd do) to select forward Carter Ashton of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, making their evening a rousing success overall.
The Bolts were hot after Ashton and were attempting to make a deal for the chance to pick him as early as the middle of the first round.
There were whispers earlier in the day of conversations between Tampa Bay and the Nashville Predators but the number two pick was never really in play and neither was Preds defenseman
Ryan Suter, whose name surfaced a time or two.
No major news last night (you know, as in
Vincent Lecavalier major) but there may be some legs to some of the rumors and teams mentioned last night. (Don't bet on the Islanders there, despite some minor legs to that rumored destination. There are far better fits for Lecavalier and better trade partners for the Lightning, should they decide to move their captain.) I certainly don't expect Lecavalier to be moved today but I wouldn't rule it out either.
The Lightning are looking to be very impactful in day two as well so definitely keep your eye on them today.
A quick look back at
my mock draft, compiled on May 20th and never edited thereafter:
26 of my top 30 players were drafted in the first round. (Jeremy Morin, Drew Shore, Landon Ferraro and Stefan Elliott were not.)
I nailed the top three but did not get another pick exactly right in the rest of the round.
Of the four trades I predicted, none came to fruition (though the Islanders did trade up and Brian Burke certainly tried to make a move or two).
While it may look like my mock draft was a total crock of (well, you know) a closer look reveals that nine players (Evander Kane, Brayden Schenn, Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson , Nazem Kadri, Scott Glennie, Dmitri Kulikov, John Moore, Chris Kreider and Kyle Palmieri) were drafted within three spots from where I'd predicted they'd go. (Three were just one off, two were within two and four others, three.)
Basically, I've proven that anyone can guess fairly well every now and then. (And Bob McKenzie only had one more of
his top thirty picked than I did. Pbbbblllllllt.)
That's it for now. Just like yesterday, out of convenience, I'll relay news and information via Twitter for the rest of the draft today, while anything major, of course, I'll also post here.

Thanks, as always, and enjoy!
