McGuire believes lack of discipline unraveled Pittsburgh's playoff hopes

Notes from Pierre McGuire in an interview with Bob Pompeani on the 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh on Saturday:

McGuire felt that the “swing moment,” as he called it, was the “Daniel Briere off-sides goal” in Game 1. Even though the Pens were still up after the goal, McGuire feels that the Pens “unraveled.” McGuire says that Pittsburgh was not nearly the same disciplined team they were all year after that.

McGuire doesn’t see Sidney Crosby or Jordan Staal getting moved. He called it pure speculation that Evgeni Malkin could get traded but he believes that of the three Malkin would go first.

He could see Malkin going in the event Pittsburgh could trade for the rights to Zach Parise and sign him. In that case, Paul Martin or Zbynek Michalek would be traded, also. He acknowledged that the CBA has a lot to do with the scenario.

McGuire could see New Jersey trading the rights to Parise if it can come to terms with him. The Devils could get a first-round pick, second rounder or prospect for Parise’s rights.

The NBC analyst doesn’t believe Jordan Staal is going anywhere, though it’s possible the Staal brothers hold out hope of playing together some day. He doesn’t see that happening in Pittsburgh or New York, but perhaps that could happen in Carolina.

McGuire doesn’t believe Toronto has much hope of landing a Malkin or Staal. He doesn’t believe the Leafs have the prospects Pittsburgh would want. He called the organization “asset poor.”

McGuire says that he understands the Toronto AHL team is having success but that doesn’t equate to NHL success, that they may have one strong player or so. Brian Burke will be entering his fifth year but still doesn’t have much to work with.

Montreal could be in on Malkin, but that’s pure speculation. Pittsburgh would want back a strong offensive player and other parts.
