Giroux comments sure to incite another season of Pens-Flyers rivalry

The Philadelphia Flyers’ Claude Giroux claims Sidney Crosby fractured one of his wrists during the playoffs.

Giroux received a pair of nearly symmetrical battle scars from Crosby, the Timmins Press reports.

“Those are from (Sidney) Crosby,” he says half smiling, but with some tension in his voice. “Every time we'd line up against each other for a face-off during our (2012 playoff) series, instead of going for the puck when it was dropped, he'd hack me across the wrists. I ended up playing the series against (New) Jersey with one of them fractured and had to go for surgery on both of them after we were out of the playoffs.”

Unos, Dos, Tres, Catorce -- Who would’ve thought that the rock group song from U-2 would turn out to be the theme song for Shea Weber's offer sheet – 14 years, $110 million?

Sorry, but $7 million for one season of Alexander Semin is not money well spent. Once again, proof positive if you’re a semi-decent unrestricted free agent then all it takes is one GM to overpay. Makes you wonder if the Penguins could’ve pried even more off of GM Rutherford for Jordan Staal.

The Examiner has a decidedly more positive take on the Semin signing.

“We have done a lot of research about Alexander, and discussions about his fit with our team have included people at many different levels of our organization, including players, coaches and staff,” said Rutherford.

“What’s been clear throughout this process was his commitment to wanting to play in the NHL, and compete against the world’s best players.”

Shane Doan is “very interested” if things don’t work out in Phoenix. Of course, that’s what his agent Terry Bross told the San Jose Sharks way back on July 15.

"Yes, very much so," responded agent Terry Bross in an email to the Contra Costa Times. "He is very intrigued should things not work out here."

** One wonders if agent Bross would have Doan sign with multiple teams, if possible **

Doan put a Thursday flight to the East Coast on hold to meet with potential Coyotes buyer, Greg Jamison, on Friday, according to the azcentral.com.

"I say there are three or four that he's very serious about," agent Bross said. "There's probably two more that he has a lot of interest in. I wouldn't be shocked if we had a decision next week.

"It's time to fish or cut bait," Bross said. "All the obstacles are out of the way, so I can't hold these teams off forever. They have franchises to run, and they need to make moves for their clubs as well. I don't think it's fair to Shane or the other clubs that might be interested to continue to drag this out."

Alexander Ovechkin’s recent career has proven largely forgettable, but his rookie season was special. Washington Capitals owner, Ted Leonsis, genuflects on Ovie’s big rookie campaign of 2005-06 here.

“Alex Ovechkin had a once in a generation rookie year. To remind everyone of how special it was – Alex Ovechkin burst onto the scene in his first game for the Capitals and on his first shift, he made a hit that was so hard that the glass broke and the game had to be stopped. His first goal of the game tied the score. And then he won the game in overtime. Welcome to the NHL – two goals in a debut game.”

Plenty of analysts still believe Shea Weber will become a Philadelphia Flyer after another season, the The Tennessean reports.

“What I think this means now is that Shea Weber is going to play for them for a year, and then this time next year he’s going to demand a trade,” Ken Campbell of the Hockey News said.
